The KUCL Patron Programme was established to support local literary and publishing communities. We are committed to the sustainable development of the book market and readership, along with nurturing Kraków's heritage and image as a literary city. The programme provides patronage over valuable publications concerning the literary character of the city in the broadest sense of the term, with publishers receiving a bundle of promotional activities. Publications can apply for KUCL patronage if they:
- are connected to Krakow or Małopolska through the author or translator, the publishing house or the topic of the publication;
- are connected to projects carried out as part of the KUCL programme, for example their authors participate in Krakow’s literary festivals, such as the Conrad Festival, the Miłosz Festival or the Children’s Literature Festival,
- concern topics connected to Stanisław Lem in the broadest sense of the term, namely they refer to Stanisław Lem’s works or are part of long-term projects related to the establishment of Planet Lem Centre for Literature and Language;
- fit in with other elements of the KUCL strategy and the guidelines of the KUCL programme (e.g. anniversaries, commemorative events and programme priorities such as literary education, promoting reading among children and youth and community projects);
- or if the publication is nominated by a publishing house that signed the Krakow Convention.
Starting in 2020, the Kraków UNESCO City of Literature Prize joined the KUCL Patronage Programme. To date, more than 200 authors – debutants and well-established representatives of the literary world – have received significant financial support across six editions of the programme.
As part of the KUCL Patronage Programme, which has been running and growing since 2017, we have so far provided promotional support to more than 450 translation, comic book and playwriting projects.
To nominate a publication to the KUCL Patronage Programme, send an e-mail to patronaty@miastoliteratury.pl. Requests are processed all year round, no later than 30 days from the date of submission. The decision to grant patronage, as well as any decisions concerning its terms and conditions are made by representatives of the Literary Department of the Krakow Festival Office based on expert knowledge, the KUCL Strategy as well as the regulations in force concerning the Krakow Festival Office.
