Larysa Andriievska visits Krakow thanks to the Janina Katz literary residence

Ukrainian translator and editor Andriievska will come to Krakow in May as part of the Janina Katz literary residence. For the next two months, she will work in the Royal City and participate in its literary life. The second author will join us in a month’s time.

Larysa Andriievska works as a project manager and a literary translator – she specialises in Polish absurd theatre, contemporary drama, Jewish studies and culture of the borderlands. She curates publishing, translation and theatre projects and she is also involved in cross-border sociocultural initiatives. She has translated works by Witold Gombrowicz, Zbigniew Herbert, Marek Hłasko, Paweł Huelle, Stanisław Lem, Sławomir Mrożek, Bolesław Prus, Tadeusz Różewicz and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz.

Kraków UNESCO City of Literature will host the artist for two months, along with a stipend and reimbursement of travel expenses to and from Kraków, technical and logistical support, as well as the opportunity to get to know the local literary and publishing scene and to establish valuable professional contacts.

The matron of the residence is Janina Katz (1939-2013), a Krakow-based writer, poet and translator. In 1969, she was forced to leave Poland in an aftermath of an anti-Semitic campaign. She spent the rest of her life in Copenhagen. She has won many prestigious literary awards in Denmark. She has translated works by Wisława Szymborska, Zbigniew Herbert, Sławomir Mrożek and other artists into Danish.

Literary residence is held under the patronage of the municipal project Krakowianki (focusing on the role of women in the city), Open Krakow and Krakow for Equality. The initiative is part of Kraków UNESCO City of Literature’s year-long programme of literary residencies.
