WELCOME IN KRAKOW THE UNESCO CITY OF LITERATURE
In 2013, Kraków was the seventh city in the world to receive the title of UNESCO City of Literature awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The awarding of the prestigious title was an expression of recognition for the heritage and contemporary literary potential of Krakow, but it also became a strong impulse for further development and strengthening of the local book market.
The Krakow UNESCO City of Literature (KMLU) program, operated by KBF, integrates public institutions, municipal cultural institutions and non-governmental organizations in activities for the development of literature.
We have something to build on. Krakow is the cradle of the Polish language and Polish literature, the most important Polish writers were associated with the city, and the most important literary trends of subsequent eras intersected here. Already in the 11th century, the first scriptoria were created in Krakow, and the first prints in Poland were published here - first in Latin, later also in Polish.
