OFF Miłosz – crossing the borders

We cross the borders for the second time! Like last year, this year’s Milosz Festival is accompanied by the dynamically developing stream OFF Miłosz. It is a platform for expression for young, independent artists, who are not afraid of literary experiments, reaching for new, less traditional art forms, like performance poetry. Guests from abroad, discussions, performances, workshops and international slam – all of that within reach in Krakow between the 8th and the 11th of June.

It’s become already tradition. This year’s Miłosz Festival once again will go in parallel with the Festival of Children’s Literature. We will read, learn the secrets of typography, listen to involving stories and compare science and literature. At the end of each day – before sunset – we will be listening to men’s reading, with participation of unique lectors. The youngest and a little older ones will listen, but first of all discover, create and act, all of that accompanied by the best works if children’s literature. For the first time in the history of both festivals the Ferdinand the Magnificent Award for the Best Polish Book for Children will be awarded. The award is funded by the Krakow Festival Office, the operator of Krakow UNESCO City of Literature.

A literary walk and a meeting with a hero of Adam Wajrak’s new book. The prospects for the Children’s Day in Krakow UNESCO City of Literature look promising. We have planned a rich literary programme of events. On nearest Saturday (27 May) you are invited to a family literary walk of Krakow along with the trail of children’s literature. On the Children’s Day (1 June) there will be a meeting with Adam Wajrak and the hero of his new book Lolek – the dog , at 11 Powiśle Street. On that day follow the profile: Krakow UNESCO City of Literature. Look for a competition with book awards. Expect surprises!

On 27 May, at 5.00 pm, families with children are invited to a walk along the children’s literature trail. We invite children and grown-ups who still remember how it is like to be a child. We will walk around Krakow retracing children’s literature. We will revisit the books by Antonina Domańska, the author of”Paziowie króla Zygmunta and Historia żółtej ciżemki, and of Jadwiga Żylińska who wrote the story about the alchemist Sędziwój; we will also reach for works by contemporary writers, such as. Dorota Terakowska and Barbara Gawryluk. Łucja Malec-Kornajew from Fishka Krakow Tours will be our guide.

Participation in the walks is free of charge but you need to register. Please send your application by e-mail to the following address: spacery@miastoliteratury.pl, only the last free places have been left.

On the 1st of June at 4:00 pm we invite all families, and in particular those with pets, to a meeting with Adam Wajrak – a journalist, a naturalist, and an author of books for children and adults (e.g. Przewodniki prawdziwych tropicieli, Wilki and, jointly with Tomasz Samojlik, Umarły Las). He lives in the Bialowieża Forest. The meeting will be held in Metaforma café at Powiśle 11 Pavilion. We will talk about the friendship between humans and animals and about how one day a dog appeared in Adam Wajrak’s life. He still lives with the author in Teremiski, and was a model for the lead character of the book. The meeting will be combined with the premiere of Wajrak’s book Lolek. The book was issued under the patronage of Krakow UNESCO City of Literature. The meeting will be moderated by Anna Zygmunt, the Literary Department of the Krakow Festival Office – the operator of the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature programme.

The meeting is open for families with children of all ages. Pets are welcome!

From 11 to 16 May 2017 representatives of the programme Krakow-UNESCO City of Literature took part in the conference: ”Literature Diversity and Urban Sustainable Development” in Nanjing, China. The conference brought together leading representatives of Asian culture and offered a perfect opportunity to exchanges between experts and meetings of representatives of China’s creative sectors and culture. The four-day conference offered the opportunity to discuss various themes: talent and creativity as methods to support innovation, economic growth and employment, single digital market, social cohesion and intercultural dialogue, and the ways to enhance cooperation between Europe and China through culture. Four days full of debates, including plenary sessions devoted to the main goals of the Chinese literary agenda in the context of the city’s application to the Cities of Literature Network, as well as smaller session, offering the space for debate, exchange and creating new cooperation networks.

Krakow now chairs the UNESCO steering committee and coordinates the UNESCO Cities of Literature Network. The City of Nanjing invited Krakow as an expert city to mentor on its application to the UNESCO Network of Creative Cities. The participation of the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature representatives helped to create a network through establishing contacts with prospective partners for further international projects and initiatives and the building of strong, long-term relations with Chinese partners.

The Krakow Festival Office is the operator of the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature programme.

Nearly sixty guests, more than fifty meetings and plenty of accompanying events on the programme!

For the sixth time already Krakow has attracted the most outstanding poets from Poland and abroad, translators of literature and lovers of poetry to celebrate the Miłosz Festival from 8 to 11 June. In the weeks to follow we will take a closer look at the Festival programme. Stay close with the Festival via social media, in particular Facebook, Twitter (@KBFmedia) and Instagram (krakowcityofliterature). We will keep you updated on various surprises awaiting you at this year’s Festival.

Until the end of this year, if you visit one of the ten branches of the Krakow Library (in Powroźnicza Street, Aleja Pokoju , Radzikowskiego, Opolska, Królewska, Fałata and Łużycka Streets, and Tysiąclecia, Kościuszkowskie and Zgody Housing Estates), you will see large-format photographs of Czesław Miłosz.

Unique portraits of the Nobel Prize winning poets on display at the exhibition scattered around the Library branches have been created by Judyta Papp who specialises in artistic portraits of prominent Poles. The portraits were made in the years 1997-2003, in Krakow, where the poet spent the last years of his life.

Judyta Papp is a photographer, a graphic artist and author of a few albums. Next to Czesław Miłosz, she also photographed John Paul II, President Lech Wałęsa, Wisława Szymborska, Krzysztof Penderecki, Andrzej Wajda, Roman Polański, Sławomir Mrożek, Ryszard Kapuściński and many others. Her sensitivity to individual and unique features of the persons portrayed makes her works look very natural, while at the same personal.

On 12 May 2107 we visited Svět knihy, i.e. the Prague Book Fair. Among other things, literary gadgets from Krakow were available at special UNESCO Cities of Literature stands.

We participated in the panel debate with the partner city of Krakow in the UNESCO City of Literature– with our gracious hosts from the Czech Republic along with the representatives of Barcelona, Nottingham and Lviv. We talked among other things, about the benefits from the participation in the Creative Cities programme for the community, its image and the economics, the importance of integrating diverse forms of literary life, on the roles of programme coordinators in each city and on how to promote readership in the Smartphone era.

The role of Krakow in the steering committee of the UNESCO Cities of Literature was highlighted, setting the city’s effort to implement the Krakow UNESCO City of Literature programme and evaluation as a model.
