On the 23rd of September, the II Chair of Internal Diseases at the Medical College of Jagiellonian University at ul. Skawińska 8 will be named after professor Andrzej Szczeklik. The professor was not only an outstanding medical doctor and a renown scientist, but also a friend to many artists and a writer – he wrote a number of essays on the border of medicine and art, compiled into three volumes, Katharis. O uzdrowicielskiej mocy natury i sztuki [Catharsis: On the Art of Medicine], Kore. O chorych, chorobach i poszukiwaniu duszy medycyny [Kore: On Sickness, the Sick and the Search for the Soul of Medicine] and Nieśmiertelność. Prometejski sen medycyny [Immortality: A promethean Dream of Medicine], which have been very popular in Poland and translated into foreign languages. It is no coincidence that after a new inscription over the main entrance will be revealed, guests, including many writers, will proceed to the lecture hall where artistic performances will take place. A programme hosted by Bronisław Maj will feature Anna Szałapak, Zbigniew Preisner, Jerzy Trela, and Jacek Wójcicki. The hospital, called the “hotel of dreams” by Piotr Skrzynecki, is considered an unusual place. This is the only clinic with a statue devoted to its patient in front of the building and with a white piano in its lecture hall. Professor Szczeklik had a distinct approach to medicine as a field related to art which constantly tries to surpass the limits of cognition just like art does. This attitude is still abided by at the clinic, especially because all ten professors and PhDs employed there are his students.

Today’s episode of Klub Trójki will be devoted to Sławomir Mrożek, who passed away a month ago. Barbara Marcinik will host Professor Jerzy Jarzębski of Jagiellonian University and Bogdan Ciosek, a director who worked together with Mrożek. “The director and the author of the play “Mołotow” [Molotov] met at the beginning of the year in Polish Radio Theatre recording studio and this was a really unusual meeting… We will tell you about it. In this special episode of Klub Trójki, we will focus on Sławomir Mrożek’s latest works, texts written after his illness which was a turning point in his life. We will also hear the writer’s own voice and find out what unusual role he assumed not long ago… Finally, we will talk on the phone to Ms Ewa Zając, the curator of the Sławomir Mrożek Archive based in Montricher in Switzerland, and ask her about the institution’s activity and collection,” says the show’s trailer posted online at www.polskieradio.pl. The broadcast aired directly from Radio Krakow will begin at 9.05 p.m.
On Tuesday, the 17th of September, Krakow bid farewell to outstanding writer, playwright and graphic artist, Sławomir Mrożek. After a funeral service conducted by Krakow Metropolitan Bishop, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, the urn with the writer’s ashes was buried in National Pnatheon at St. Peter and Paul Church. Sławomir Mrożek was honoured posthumously with Krzyż Wielki Orderu Odrodzenia Polski [Grand Cross of Order of Polonia Resitua].
Until noon, residents of Krakow could bid farewell to Sławomir Mrożek at the Barbican, where the urn and a condolence book were placed. At 12.30 p.m., the urn was taken by a horse-drawn hearse from the Barbican through St. Florian’s Gate to St. Peter and Paul Church (ul. Grodzka). In his funeral rites, the playwright was accompanied by his family, among others by his widowed wife, Susana Osorio-Mrożek, as well as by representatives of the Wydawnictwo Literackie publishing house, Wera Michalski-Hoffmann and Anna Zaremba-Michalska with her husband Mirosław. At 1.00 p.m., Krakow Metropolitan Bishop, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, conducted a funeral service.
The funeral mass at St. Peter and Paul Church was attended by Sławomir Mrożek’s family, friends, co-workers, as well as by representatives of state and local authorities including, among others, Bogdan Zdrojewski, Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Jacek Majchrowski, the Mayor of Krakow, Jerzy Miller, the Governor of the Malopolska province, Jacek Michałowski, Chief of the President’s Chancellery; Vera Michalski-Hoffman, President of the Supervisory Board of Wydawnictwo Literackie; and artists, including Jerzy Stuhr and Olgierd Łukaszewicz. “Sławomir Mrożek chose to be a Krakow person, he made that choice repeatedly,” – the Mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski, emphasized. “Today, with grief in our hearts, we bid farewell to him, but at the same time he finds his place in the National Pantheon, a place where future generations will be able to pay tribute to him.” Jerzy Stuhr emphasized that with Mrożek’s departure, a certain age has come to an and, an age of aesthetics he had shaped. “We owe him so much,” the actor said. “We learned from him throughout our entire lives. Thanks to him, we became theatrical artists.” Olgierd Łukaszewicz spoke on behalf of Polish performing artists “No one had such a strong influence on the way we think and perceive the world as Sławomir Mrożek”.
The urn was buried at the National Pantheon, which is a burial site for the greatest Polish representatives of literature, art, culture and science. According to a decision taken by the Mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majchrowski, the sarcophagus, in which the urn was placed, was financed from the resources of Krakow Municipality.
The crypt in which Sławomir Mrożek’s ashes were buried was available to the residents of Krakow immediately after the funeral service until 6.30 p.m. and will be still available on other days within the church’s sightseeing hours. Please, do not bring flowers or lights.

Wydawnictwo Literackie, Fundacja Panteon Narodowy and the City of Krakow would like to remind that the funeral of Sławomir Mrożek will take place in Krakow this Tuesday, the 17th of September, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter and Paul Church. The service will be conducted by Krakow Metropolitan Bishop, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz.
The programme of the ceremony:
At 10.00 a.m., the Barbican, where the urn with Sławomir Mrożek’s ashes will be placed, will open for the public. This will be a chance for Krakow’s residents to bid farewell to Sławomir Mrożek.
At 12.30 p.m., the urn will be taken by a horse drawn hearse from the Barbican through St. Florian’s Gate to St. Peter and Paul Church (ul. Grodzka).
The funeral ceremony in the church will begin at 1.00 p.m. The service will be attended by Sławomir Mrożek’s family, friends, co-workers, as well as by representatives of state and local authorities. Other participants will be able to watch the ceremony on a large outdoor screen located in pl. św. Marii Magdaleny.
During the service, polyphonic compositions Officium Defunctorum and Missa pro defunctis by a Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria and Arvo Pärta chorale will be performed by Capella Cracoviensis’ chamber choir conducted by Jan Tomasz Adamus. The organ parts and improvisations will be performed by Cyprian Jagiełło, the organist of All Saints parish church.
The urn will be buried at Panteon Narodowy [National Pantheon], which is a burial site for the greatest Polish representatives of literature, art, culture and science. We would also like to remind you that from Monday (the 16th of September), a condolence book will be placed for anyone who wishes to bid farewell to the writer in the main seat of the Municipal Council (pl. Wszystkich Świętych 3-4). The book will be moved to the Barbican on the day of the funeral (Tuesday, the17th of September).

Julian Tuwim is one of the most popular poets of the 20th century. His beautiful poems move and entertain subsequent generations of readers, both children and adults. As 2013 has been announced the Julian Tuwim Year and the 13th of September is the poet’s birthday anniversary, Czas Dzieci Foundation is organising events in Poland’s five largest cities in on that day.
We will put the alphabet into order again at Preston Centre on the corner of św. Anna and Wiślna streets in Krakow. We will dress as colourful letters and we will make living words. Finally, we will form an inscription Abecadło Tuwima [Tuwim’s Alphabet] together. Children will have a chance to play the longest round of Operator and many other word games.
Julian Tuwim also wrote for adults with no lesser dash and linguistic flair. Witty retorts, funny aphorisms, juicy phrasing, plays on words, plays on conventions and genres – all of this constitutes a literary feast for all enthusiasts of Tuwim’s works. Hence the idea for Tuwim po zmroku [Tuwim By Night] project which consists in placing Julian Tuwim’s aphorisms on the wall of buildings in the centre of the city. In Krakow, the Preston Centre building will dress Pałac pod Baranami (ul. św. Anny) in poems.
The happening is part of a nation-wide project executed by the Czas Dzieci Foundation, Lokomotywa wciąż ma parę! [Locomotive Still Runs on Steam!], the aim of which is to promote the poet’s works among readers of all ages through innovative activities and marketing techniques. The organizers would like to bring Tuwim’s poetry into the public space and prove that literature is at home not only in schools and libraries. The project’s framework also includes an academic conference and jubilee competitions.

Within the scope of this year’s edition of the Narodowe Czytanie [National Reading] project, works by Aleksander Fredro will be read out loud in public places of almost 250 cities and towns all over Poland, including Krakow. The key element of the Krakow programme will be public reading of Zemsta [Vengeance] that will take place at Market Square (by the Town Hall) on the 7th of September (Saturday) at 11.00 a.m. The participants will include famous actors and actresses, among others: Dorota Segda, Anna Dymna and Urszula Grabowska, as well as a councillor, Jerzy Fedorowicz.
Narodowe Czytanie, a national campaign which consists in public reading of the greatest works of Polish literature, dates back to 2012 and was originated by the President Bronisław Komorowski. Its main aim is to promote readership, draw attention to the necessity to care for Polish language and strengthen the nation’s identity.
Last year, Adam Mickiewicz’s Pan Tadeusz [Pan Tadeusz or The Last Foray in Lithuania] was read, while this year’s edition will be devoted to Aleksander Fredro, a great writer of the Enlightenment whose works have become a part of the canon of Polish literature and constantly run in many theatres. His works will be read in public places in almost 250 cities and towns all over Poland, including Krakow.
Especially for this occasion, a commemorative seal was designed to stamp copies of books with Aleksander Fredro’s works brought by participants of Narodowe Czytanie. The campaign will start on the 7th of September (Saturday).
The key element of the Krakow programme, a field reading of Zemsta, organized by Groteska Theatre, will take place at the Market Square by the Town Hall (September 7th, Saturday, at 11.00 a.m.) with participation of famous actors and actresses: Anna Dymna, Urszula Grabowska, Dorota Segda, Tadeusz Malak, Krzysztof Orzechowski and Jacek Romanowski, as well as the president of Culture and Conservation of Monuments Comission at Krakow City Council, Jerzy Fedorowicz. On the same day, another of Fredro’s plays Mąż i żona [Husband and Wife] will be read at Bagatela Theatre (Duża Scena, ul. Karmelicka 6, at 7.15 p.m., ENTRANCE IS FREE OF CHARGE).
Also, The Nowa Huta Public Library would like to invite you to public reading of Fredro’s works with participation of journalists of Głos. Tygodnik Nowohucki, Agnieszka Łoś and Sławomir Pietrzyk and the President of District XVIII Council, Stanisław Moryc, which will take place at 11.00 a.m. at the library’s division – Filia nr 4 Oddział dla Dzieci i Młodzieży, os. Zgody 7. A special programme for the youngest participant will be available at Krowodrza Public Library and Historical Museum of the City of Krakow – The Hipolit House. The library would like to invite children and their parents to read Aleksander Fredro’s children’s stories together and listen to one of his comedies, Zemsta – an audio book recorded by M. Regent, A. Gruza, and T. Czarnecki will be played (ul. Krolewska 59, at 9.00 a.m.).
At the Hipolit House, children’s stories and poems by Fredro will be read in interiors which date back to the 18th and 19th century – that is the time when Fredro lived and worked (pl. Mariacki 3, at 11:00 a.m.). Then, children will be able to participate in art workshops on the subject of works to which they will have listened, see the interiors of the House, which are similar to the place where Aleksander Fredro lived and worked; and to learn about every day-use objects from that period of time. The programme prepared by the museum is addressed at children aged 6-10. The number of participants of the workshops is limited. Also, the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Centre of Culture proposes an unusual form of involvement into Narodowe Czytanie by organising a literary happening entitled Zemsta na Centralnym [Vengeance at the Central Square] (Plac Centralny − by “Skarbnica” bookstore, at 2:00 p.m.). Passers-by will receive fragments of the comedy and will be able to take a photo with a stand-by with the writer’s image. Krakow Festival Office have been awarded the Marka Radia Kraków! Yesterday, a jury comprised of journalists representing the Krakow media awarded two readership promotion campaigns: Drugie Życie Książki [The Second Life of a Book] and Wirtualna Biblioteka Wydawców [Publishers’ Virtual Library].
In their substantiation for awarding Drugie Życie Książki, which is organised in cooperation with the Bookeriada Internet portal, the jury pinpointed that means by which readers are reached, a variety of accompanying events and interesting guest form the world of literature are the key factors. A simple idea of book exchange has been successfully held at various venues all over Krakow. Also Wirtualna Biblioteka Wydawców has become an important summer event in Krakow: readers downloaded over 10,000 e-books in two-months’ time. Twenty publishing houses from Krakow promoted modern technologies in reading at sixty stops of the public transportation network. Wirtualna Biblioteka includes several dozen of the best releases from the past several months: belles-letters, biographies, reportages, poetry, books for children and teenagers. As Joanna Targoń emphasised, giving her vote to Krakow Festival Office, that “coming up with a simple, unpretentious and beneficial idea, is the most difficult.”
Only one vote in favour decided that Marka Radia Kraków was awarded to us. The Wawel Royal Castle with their cycle of Wawel-related legends missed the first place by the skin of their tongue. The jury appreciated consistency in executing their idea and a masterful edition of their legends. As Łukasz Gazur, a journalist at Dziennik Polski, emphasised, the Wawel Castle deserves sincere congratulations on their choice of visual methods of education and illustrations for children.

And summer already starts in June, because this is when Krakow lived and breathed literature, most of all poetry. In July and August, the months during which publishing houses take a rest and gather strength for the new season, the book fair, and the most important literary awards, Krakow searched for an idea to gain new readers and offer readers some extraordinary, modern meetings with literature. Two of our campaigns were nominated: the Second Life of a Book and the Virtual Library of Publishers for taking books to the readers, attractive events in great places and with interesting guests.
